what length is rebar

Quick answer: Direct from the manufacturer a UK standard rebar length is 6.1m, but these are usually cut down to standard, popular stock lengths for ease of transport and ordering. Longer lengths can be made to order if required, but the standard rebar sizes are ideal for use in almost every situation.

Engineers and designers in the UK should be well aware of the manufactured dimensions of standard rebar, and their final specifications for rebar in beams, columns, slabs etc, will reflect this. However, in some cases, site conditions will demand deviation from regular rebar sizes.

Here’s our guide to the regular standards, and what to do when things are different!

What Lengths Does Rebar Come In?

The type of rebar will determine the standard length available to some degree. However, if you have a bending schedule we can cut and supply rebar to size, to order.

H Type Rebar

H type rebar is supplied as a straight bar from 10mm diameter to 20mm and is available in four standard lengths, 1000, 1500, 3000, and 6000mm.

1500mm is the standard length for splice bars. When joining cages splice bars give enough overlap to ensure the cohesion of tensile forces through a beam, avoiding creating weak spots while maintaining structural integrity.

Use this standard rebar for heavy-duty work such as piling, pile caps, larger ground beams, and columns.

T Type Rebar

T type rebar is usually specified for lighter applications and as such is supplied from 8mm in diameter up to 20mm. It is supplied in fewer standard stock lengths, namely, 1500mm, 3000mm, and 6000mm.

Use this standard rebar for most small-scale works, such as ring beams for domestic extensions, to augment mesh in a raft foundation, or to balance loads through slabs, beams, and other structural elements.

How Much 8mm Rebar in a Tonne?

8mm rebar weighs in at just 0.395 kg per metre, so a tonne is equal to a huge 2,531 metres of material. 8mm is light and easy to handle as individual pieces. A tonne of 8mm, cut to standard 6000mm lengths will deliver 422 lengths.

How Many 3000mm Lengths of H20 Rebar to the Tonne?

H20 rebar weighs in at 2.47kg/m, so is substantially heavier than 8mm. If you were to order 135 x 3m lengths the delivery would come in at just over the tonne.

At just under 7.5kg, a 3m length of T20 rebar is not difficult to handle as a single item. Larger numbers of rebars should be properly secured when they are moved around site.

My Order Doesn’t Have Stock Lengths. How Do I Avoid Waste?

No one wants to throw good steel away, even if it does go in a recycling skip. If you have bespoke requirements, that is not a problem for us. Rebar stock lengths don’t always measure up to what is specified by an architect or engineer

Send us your bending schedule so we can give you a quote for the supply of rebar ready to go when it gets to your site. The cost of us at RPO carrying out your cutting can save you time and money when rebar standard lengths won’t work on a project.
